Sailing: Lynch shows potential
Ireland's Finn Lynch looks set to place best of the host nation crews at the Four Star Pizza Youth Sailing World Championships on Dublin Bay, which enters its penultimate day this afternoon.
The Blessington sailor had a third place in the Laser Radial yesterday, beating his previous best result of fourth in last Saturday's opening race. The result confirmed his potential in the fleet, but was marred by an early start in the subsequent race yesterday that saw him disqualified.
Lynch was permitted to discard this penalty, but now has to count his previous worst results, a 23rd place, so his overall standing hasn't improved from eighth overall in the 58-strong class.
His counterpart in the Laser Radial girls' event also had a third place. Sophie Murphy, from Strangford Lough, moved up to 14th overall from 17th thanks to the result and also had a 13th in the day, which helped her standing.
Although sunny for the most part yesterday, winds varied from light to moderate until the occasional rain squall sharply increased windspeeds and capsized many of the less wary crews.
A strong ebb tide also made for challenging tactics and that scenario will continue for today's two races before a single-race finale tomorrow.
