Sport in brief: Ruan to honour hurler Moroney
Saturday December 19 2009
A memorial plaque to former Clare hurler John Moroney, who died in a road accident in December 1993, will be unveiled by the Ruan club tomorrow.
John played for the Clare seniors between 1985 and 1993 and was nominated for an All Star award in 1986, a year in which Clare reached the Munster final, where they lost to Cork. In his earlier career he won an All-Ireland Colleges medal with St Flannan's in 1979 and a Munster minor championship medal with Clare in 1981.
Athletics
Seven US runners have lost a preliminary ruling in their bid to keep Olympic relay medals taken away after Marion Jones was banned for doping. Jones, who has admitted to using banned substances, helped the US women win gold in the 4x400m relay and bronze in the 4x100m at the 2000 Sydney Games.
A motion by the runners against the stripping of their medals was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The court will now summon the parties to a hearing on the merits of the case. The IOC stripped all the relay medals in 2008 and CAS upheld the IOC's right to decide on them.
Motorsport
The ongoing row in the administration of Irish Motorsport took a dramatic twist yesterday with the resignation of Motorsport Ireland CEO Alex Sinclair.
The development came after Sinclair was rejected as chairman of a proposed meeting between the Motorsport Commission and dissident members of the Rallies Committee scheduled for next Monday.
Motorsport Ireland president John Naylor has asked Commission member Dermott Quigley to find a chairman from outside motorsport who would be acceptable so that the proposed meeting can take place.
Meanwhile, Sinclair, who has been involved at the top level of Irish motorspots administration for over 20 years, has also resigned from the other positions he holds within motorsport, namely as a member of the Motor Sport Commission, the Executive Council of MI and as a Director of Irish Motorsport Federation Ltd.
He will remain until March 31 to assist in the administration of the sport in the interim.
