Irish duo Nicolas Roche and Dan Martin had mixed fortunes in their debut race of the season, the Tour of the Mediterranean, which finished with a mountain stage in Grasse yesterday.
While Roche finished 13th in the mountain stage to finish fifth overall in the colours of his new Saxo Tinkoff team, Martin was forced to abandon the race along with his Garmin Sharp team-mates when their team van was broken into on Friday night and all of their bikes stolen.
Although Martin was feeling the effects of a head cold before the start, the recent King of the Mountains at the Tour of Beijing would almost certainly have moved the Irish climber up the classification as the race hit the mountains.
“I'm a little bit disappointed and was hoping for more after my good time trial. I wanted to give the team a better result as they worked really well for me but it's the start of the season and I'm not in top form yet so hopefully I can improve on this for Paris-Nice,” said Roche.
Both Roche and Martin will ride the two-day Tour du Haut Var in France next weekend.
