Young Athy trainer James Robinson enjoyed the night of his life on Saturday as Uncle Eoin won the €20,000 Townviewfoods.com Champion Stakes at Shelbourne.
Robinson trains and is the joint-owner of the son of Droopys Vieri with leading Flat jockey Kieren Fallon and both men were in jubilant mood as the trophy was handed over.
Fallon had forfeited his last ride at York in order to make it to Dublin in time for the big race and he was absolutely thrilled with this biggest success as a greyhound owner.
Robinson was virtually speechless as he took in the marvellous performance from Uncle Eoin.
"It's hard to believe," he said as he walked his pride and joy back to the kennels, while now entertaining dreams of the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby which starts on Wednesday week.
Uncle Eoin showed in front from the traps but he was joined into the bend by Razldazl Jayfkay and the two dogs went neck and neck for the remainder of the journey.
Jayfkay hit the front on the third bend but couldn't shake off Uncle Eoin and the latter proved the stronger on the run-in as he rallied impressively to win by a length in 29.81, with Tyrur Domingo a length and a half back in third.
The night was significant in terms of the forthcoming Derby and the Graham Holland-trained Meadow Bank Owl burst his way into contention with a runaway success in the Champion Plate, coming home an eight-and-a-half-length winner from Pool Hawk in 29.61.
Last year's Derby winner Tyrur McGuigan also made a major statement as he won an Open 525 in 29.75, two lengths ahead of Monlesa Alsation.
