Ireland's men's team secured their continued presence in European hockey's top flight with a match to spare as they obliterated Russia in Monchengladbach yesterday.

The emphatic scoreline was founded on a convincing first-half performance, with five different Irish players on target before the break.

Once Spain beat France 2-1 later in the day at Warsteiner Park, all mathematical possibility of Paul Revington's side being relegated evaporated.

They now meet Spain tomorrow morning (9.0am Irish time) to decide who finishes fifth.

The Russians set out an ultra-defensive stall, but the red wall was breached on 13 minutes when Mikey Watt followed up John Jermyn's initial shot, ferreting for the ball in among Marat Gafarov's pads.

The breakthrough opened the floodgates for the Irish, who ran riot thereafter.

devastating

Mitch Darling clocked up a scintillating solo effort, before Timmy Cockram produced a devastating drag flick. Eugene McGee's exemplary close control bagged another, while David Ames also hit the target to leave Ireland in complete control.

After four goals in the space of 11 dizzying minutes, not even Aleksandr Platonov's defiant strike on the stroke of half-time could dispel the conviction that the destination of the points had already been decided.

Man of the Match Geoff McCabe was on hand to profit from Watt's run to register Ireland's sixth, before John Jermyn fired in a couple of penalty corners to complete the devastation.

Ironically, the Russians had a good claim to have posted the best of the 10 goals as Pavel Plesetskiy succeeded in chipping the ball over lanky David Harte.

Coach Revington cheerfully acknowledged: "Our first-half performance was pretty terrific. It settled the game."
