Iconic magazine Sports Illustrated will have a distinctly Irish flavour this week after the media outlet revealed their latest front cover.
The American sports media franchise, which is read by 23m people every week, has announced that UFC star Conor McGregor will be the front of this week’s issue in the lead-up to UFC 196.
The Dubliner is currently without an opponent for the fight after Brazilian Rafael Dos Anjos pulled out of next week’s encounter with an injury, though a number of potential replacements have been mooted.
Executive Editor and Senior Writer Jon Wertheim spent time in Ireland recently to find out more about the rising star of the sport and the magazine has been fulsome in its praise for McGregor’s work to date.
“He is the brightest star in the UFC cosmos right now, the sport’s centre of gravity, and the rare fighter whose talents in the Octagon keep pace with his talents for promotion,” the magazine wrote today.
“Conor McGregor’s fight at UFC 196 may now be in limbo, but there are no questions about the UFC star’s popularity and rise.”
McGregor is the first male UFC fighter to appear on the cover since Roger Huerta in 2007.
