Equestrian: It was an Irish one-two in the Derby at 5-Star Falsterbo in Sweden on Saturday where Cian O'Connor and Quidam's Cherie pipped Dermott Lennon and Loughview Lou-Lou in a three-way jump-off.
From a starting field of 22, only the two Irishmen and Great Britain's William Funnell (Billy Onslow) managed to conquer the long first-round track. And O'Connor claimed the €25,000 winner's purse when clear again and quickest home, to become only the third Irish winner of the prestigious competition, previously claimed by Lt Col Gerry Mullins and Capt Shane Carey.
Further underpinning the current form of Irish showjumpers, Tipperary's Greg Broderick finished third in the 5-Star Grand Prix on his Global Champions Tour debut in Estoril, Portugal, on Saturday.
Just four qualified for the third-round jump-off, and Broderick's careful clear with the super-talented MHS Going Global left him over three seconds off the winning time set by world No 1, Great Britain's Scott Brash.
The Irishman scooped €45,000 while Brash took €100,000, and Irish Chef d'Equipe Robert Splaine may be well pleased with Broderick and his nine-year-old gelding because Darragh Kenny's brilliant stallion, Imothep, has been withdrawn from selection for next month's European Championships due to injury.
