Ciara Ginty has secured a silver medal at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing after losing her lightweight final today.

The 16-year-old Geesala fighter put up a brave fight but was beaten by talented American Jajaira Gonzales in her final today.

The American edged the meeting between the current World Junior champion (Ginty) and the current World Youth champion.

Ginty received the AIBA Best World Junior Female Boxer of the Year Award following the world championship's Kazakhstan last year.

Donegal heavyweight Michael Gallagher was the other Irish medallist winning a bronze medal.

Irish boxing has now won nine medals – two gold, potentially three today, two silver and five bronze – at the last two Olympics and Youth Olympics since 2008.
