Varadkar to join Kenny at opening ceremony

LEO Varadkar will be attending the Olympics opening ceremony, along with Enda Kenny, this Friday, writes Fionnan Sheahan.

The Transport and Sport Minister will attend the first five days of London 2012.

He will be attending an event with the Irish business diaspora linked to 'The Gathering' celebrations next year and meeting the Irish Olympic team at the Irish Embassy.

He will also go to watch several Irish Olympians in action at their events.

Mr Varadkar will be keeping the costs down, flying commercial and staying in the Embassy.

Due to Olympic rules, only one sports minister from each country is allowed to attend at a time.

Junior Sports Minister Michael Ring will be travelling out for the second week of the games and is expected to watch the bouts of Katie Taylor.

Mr Kenny will also be attending the opening ceremony on Friday.
