Irish Olympic heroes touchdown at Dublin Airport this afternoon

Published 13/08/2012 | 14:02

KATIE Taylor and the Irish Olympic team have arrived at Dublin Airport.

The 66 athletes and coaching staff touched down just before 2pm.

Also onboard was Ireland's medal tally of one gold, one silver and three bronze, matching the record total from Melbourne in 1956.

It wasn't the largest team Ireland ever sent to a games, but the athletes competed across 14 different events.

They arrived this afternoon to meet their families and hold a press conference, although previous plans for a public reception were cancelled.

Several of the athletes are however returning to celebrations in their home towns including Katie Taylor, who will be welcomed back to Bray with her gold medal.

Silver medal-winning boxer John Joe Nevin will also be cheered back to his native Mullingar later.
