Cian O’Connor to take Denis Lynch’s place in Olympic showjumping team
SHOW jumper Cian O'Connor is to take Denis Lynch's place in the Irish Olympic equestrian squad.
The unfortunate Lynch had his nomination dramatically withdrawn on Monday by Horse Sport Ireland.
The Irish management picked O'Connor and mount Blue Loyd instead of Shane Sweetnam, the Corkman who was the other main option.
O’Connor was forced to hand back the gold medal he won in Athens at the 2004 Olympics.
His horse Waterford Crystal failed a drugs test.
Lynch had his nomination withdrawn after his horse Lantinus was disqualfied from the Aachen show for failing a hypersensitivity test.
The German-based rider is expected to appeal the decision.
Lynch may appeal directly to the Olympic Council of Ireland or the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
