Athletics: London boost for Byrne in Longford

LINDA Byrne, one of three Irish women who have qualified for the Olympic marathon, gave herself the perfect send-off by knocking a minute off her best time and finishing second overall in the Longford Half-marathon yesterday.

Only Carlow's Kevin Lawlor (71:31) was faster than Byrne (72:32), who came home ahead of the second fastest man, Sligo's Richard Gorman (74:29).

Elsewhere, Marian Heffernan was just outside her lifetime best and fastest of the Irish 4x400m squad who were in action individually in Nivelles, Belgium.

Heffernan's winning 400m time of 53.19 was just short of her 53:10 PB and Ferrybank's hurdle specialist Jessie Barr knocked over a second off her flat PB when second in 53:70, with Michelle Carey on 53.71, Claire Bergin on 53.91 and Caitriona Cuddihy, 54.62.

Derval O'Rourke was fourth in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13:23. the race was won by Australia's Sally Pearson in 12:52.
