No laughing matter as comedian Pat Shortt struts his stuff for the Join Spar and Ray run
Over 600 entrants went to the line yesterday in Dundalk for the Join SPAR and Ray for 5k lunchtime run – the fourth in a week-long series of events that have taken place at different venues around the country.
Among the celebrities present were comedian Pat Shortt, who completed the 5k course in 37 minutes, Niall 'Bressie' Breslin of RTE 'Voice of Ireland' fame, and Ruth Field, author of the bestselling book, 'Run Fat Bitch, Run'.
The entrants also included local Dundalk runner Collette O'Hagan, who has completed well in excess of 200 marathons.
"There was a great outpouring of local support for this event, which was organised by Athletics Louth in association with Athletics Ireland," said race director Georgina Drumm.
"All the athletic clubs in Louth joined together to help organise the event and we also received great assistance and encouragement from Fiona Healy at Dundalk Town Council and Sergeant John O'Flaherty, who delivered excellent Garda traffic management for the entire run.
"A special thank you is also due to Adrienne Keogh and Donna at the Lisdoo restaurant, who provided the HQ for race registration, and to Beagan's for the use of their car parking facilities."
The event started and finished on the riverbank walkway in Dundalk and followed a meandering route through the streets of the Louth town.
"This was another highly enjoyable event with great atmosphere," said Today FM presenter Ray D'Arcy.
The Join SPAR and Ray for 5k series culminates today in the Phoenix Park, where 2,000 entrants will go to the start line at 1.0.
