NGBs facing anxious wait

Sunday January 29 2012

The national governing bodies will soon find out their core funding allocation for the year from the Irish Sports Council.

The council took the strategic decision not to pass on the five per cent cut -- approximately €2m -- in its budget for the year to the various high performance units given that this is an Olympic year, so this means the bulk of the savings will have to come from the grants to the NGBs.

For those smaller NGBs it could be a worrying wait. The funding from the council is vital to them and any change, no matter how small, will have an impact on their ability to function. Larger organisations like the FAI and the GAA are arguably better equipped to absorb a cut and it will be interesting to see if the council takes this view when it makes its decision.
