Melia shines in Rathangan league triumph
Claire Melia lit up the National Basketball Arena as Rathangan's Ard Scoil claimed the U-19A Girls All-Ireland Schools League title.
The Monasterevin girl shone in her school's U-16A final defeat on Thursday and was named MVP against St Angela's of Cork.
Cork duo Kelly Diggin and Hayley Lenihan will play with Ireland at the U-18 European Championships this summer but Claire Melia was unstoppable. She finished with 28 points and at least as many rebounds to set up the fast break.
St Angela's showed their intent early on as Kelly Diggin flung the ball 60 feet to Alex Macheta in transition.
Lenihan was hovering at the perimeter and creating options inside, but Rathangan's Holli Dunne stood firm and Melia's rebounding gave confidence to players like Kelly Anne Scully to shoot from deep.
The girls of St Louis Kiltimagh took the U-16B League crown after a 44-39 win over Kinsale Community School.
St Louis were 18 points clear at one point but fended off a Kinsale run with tough defence to hold out for the five-point win. The win sealed an All-Ireland League and Cup double for the Mayo side.
Coláiste Iognáid completed an unbeaten run for Galway schools at finals week as the U-16B boys beat Intermediate School of Killorglin. The Galway school - known locally as 'The Jes' - settled first but Killorglin hit back through the outside shooting of Liam Croke and Eoin O'Sullivan.
Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál of Blarney beat St Brogan's of Bandon in the all-Cork U19C Boys decider at Neptune Stadium.
