Mcdermott fires alexandra to title glory in extra-time

HOCKEY: Hannah McDermott's 'silver goal' ended St Andrew's reign as Leinster Schoolgirl's Senior Cup champions as Alexandra College came from behind to win 2-1 and secure their sixth title at Grange Road yesterday.

Joanne Lavery set Andrew's on course for a potential third successive title when she wrong-footed Emma Mee-Hayes, slipping home the only clear-cut chance of the first half, just 45 seconds before the break.

But Alex dominated a more open second half, levelling through Nicola Gray's penalty corner in the 43rd minute, to send the game into extra-time. And just 45 seconds into time added on, Rebecca Evans' pin-point pass found McDermott in the centre of the circle and she calmly rolled the ball into the bottom corner.

Youth Olympian Emily Beatty's pace and Deirdre Duke's guile showed Alex's potential, while the rangy Sophie Marshall threatened. Gillian Pinder was her side's main creative force.

Alex now qualify for the Kate Russell All-Ireland school's championships later this month in Limerick. They now face hosts Crescent, Lurgan HS, Loreto Kilkenny and the winners of next Tuesday's tie between Salerno and Colaiste Iognaid in the Connacht decider. St Andrew's have the chance for revenge on the provincial circuit in the Senior Premier League in two weeks time.
