Life begins at 40: Women’s Tennis Association celebrates 40 years
FORTY years after the formation of the Women’s Tennis Association by Billie Jean King and 61 of her fellow female professional tennis players, the WTA celebrated its birthday in style at Wimbledon. But how many of these female stars of the court can you successfully name without looking at the caption?
Most of the female winners of Wimbledon over the last four decades got together for a special photoshoot to mark the occasion. The organisation is marking its birthday with a series of events over the next year.
Prior to the WTA's formation, the annual prize money available to female tennis players was close to $2 million. Today it's $118 million across the WTA's 54 events in 33 countries and the four majors.
