Golden girls Katie Taylor has secured another medal following this morning's comprehensive win over Sweden's Ida Lundblad in the quarter-finals of the European Games.
The Bray girl was her usual unstoppable self as she secured a unanimous 10-9, 10-9, 10-9 victory over Lundblad to seal her place in the semi-finals where she will face Azerbaijan’s Yana Alekseevna.
The other Irish boxers in action today at the European Games in Baku experienced mixed fortunes.
Belfast lightweight Sean McComb guaranteed himself a bronze medal at worst but both Dean Walsh (light welter) and London Olympian Adam Nolan (welterweight) lost their quarter final clashes.
Nolan was beaten on a split 2-1 decision by Britain’s Josh Kelly. The Wexford boxer put in a storming final round winning it on all three judges’ cards.
However, Kelly had built up a sufficient lead at that stage to get the verdict.
Walsh lost on a unanimous 3-0 decision to Kastriot Sopa from Germany. The Wexford native received a public warning for reckless use of his head.
His opponent was lucky not to have a point deducted as well as he has warned by the referee about the use of his head in both the first and second rounds.
So it was left to McComb to do the business and he did it in style switching his tactics at the start of second round paved the way for a unanimous win over Turkey’s Yasin Yilmaz.
