OVER 600 walkers, joggers and runners brought a new beat to the streets of Westport when they joined Today FM presenter Ray D'Arcy on his latest Join Spar and Ray for 5k event – the third run in a week-long series of events taking place in towns around the country.

"We were blessed with a day of bright sunshine – cold but ideal conditions for all participants," said Pat Staunton of Westport Athletic Club, who organised the event in association with Athletics Ireland and with support from the local gardai, Order of Malta, Westport Leisure Park and Westport Town Council.

The historic and beautiful Westport House proved the ideal venue for the start and finish of the run.

Entrants were entertained at the start by the Clew Bay Pipe Band and later on by the Westport Town Band, while a lone drummer kept the beat alive at the 4km mark. The official race starters were comedian PJ Gallagher and Deca-Iron Distance Triathlon winner and author Gerry Duffy.

Today's run takes place in Dundalk, and the series culminates in the Phoenix Park tomorrow.
