Johnston central to YMCA cup drive

Three of the five Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup second-round ties scheduled to be played in and around Dublin today have failed to survive the rain and the match of the day, between North County and North Down at Inch, was in doubt last night.

The Hills called off their game against CIYMS on Thursday and the all-Leinster ties between Leinster and Railway Union and Merrion and Clontarf went the same way yesterday.

The only tie in Dublin almost certain to beat the weather is Terenure's game on the mat against YMCA. Former Ireland captain Trent Johnston -- in the 'A' side for next week's international against Scotland in Glasgow to get him up to match fitness ahead of the ODI against Australia in Belfast two weeks today -- has started bowling again for YM.

In the Irish Cup, holders Waringstown are away to North West league champs Brigade, while Coleraine host Donemana. There are also eight games in the National Cup, with Middleton hosting favourites Rush.

Elsewhere, because of rain, no play was possible for the second consecutive day in the third Test between England and West Indies.
