Irish women suffer shock defeat to Belarus at Hockey World League

Published 26/02/2013 | 11:42

Ireland suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to Belarus this morning in the FIH Hockey World League Two in Valencia, Spain.

After beating the Czech Republic 4-1 yesterday Ireland had been expected to win today but Darren Smith’s side never got into their stride.

Ireland, the highest ranked team in the 5-nation tournament, must finish in the top two in the round robin event to qualify for the Hockey World League Three and have the chance to qualify for the World Cup.

Smith’s Ireland, ranked 14th in the world, will have to win their remaining games against Spain and Italy to advance.
