Irish trio forced to settle for bronze at European Juniors
IRELAND'S John Nevin, Luke Thomas and Martin Conroy had to settle for a hat-trick of bronze medals in yesterday's European Junior Championships in Keszthely, Hungary.
The trio all lost out in the semi-finals. Nevin, who boxes out of Cavan BC, lost out on a 7-4 decision to England's Pat McCormack in the 50kg class.
Cork light-welter Thomas, of Watergrasshill BC, also lost out to an English opponent with Sunderland's Isaac McLeod claiming an 11-5 decision over the Leesider. Mayo middleweight Conroy, who boxes out of Ballyhaunis BC, was the last Irish boxer in action yesterday and was defeated 8-5 to Vasily Tsitilashvili of Georgia.
All three Irish boxers will be presented with their bronze medals during today's finals.
Meanwhile, the AIBA World Junior Championships glove off in Kazakhstan on July 23.
The Irish squad are due to arrive home from Hungary tomorrow night.
