There was delight for Irish sailors Shane MacCarthy and Andy Thompson today after the pair became GP14 national champions in Devon.

Greystones native MacCarthy and his colleague were crowned winners without having to sail the last race in Brixham

In what was a successful day for the Irish involved, Alan Blay and David Johnson of Sutton Dinghy clubs finished fifth overall in the 44-boat fleet.

Irish boats claimed all but four of the nine races during the week-long event.

MacCarthy won three races and Blay won two in May of this year, MacCarthy and Thompson won the British inland Championships and in June.

MacCarthy and Damian Bracken won the Ulster championship in Lough Erne.
