Irish girls are a big hit
AS the Irish Amateur Boxing Association embarked on its centenary year celebrations last week, it did so still basking in the warm glow of more success for its female boxers and confirmation that it will host the European Senior Championships in Dublin next June.
Katie Taylor (pictured) was confirmed as world female boxer of the year for the second year running, while there were two silver and four bronze medals for six Irish girls at the European Youth and Junior Championships in France. The IABA's decision to send a team to Calais was not universally approved of but it certainly paid dividends.
In the meantime, the association, hoping to build on its successes, has advertised for the post of coach to the junior development squad and the position will be filled on a two-year contract basis, and is funded by the Irish Sports Council.
