Ireland's Aileen Reid medal hopes have been dashed after she finished sixth in this morning's triathlon at the inaugural European Games in Baku.

Reid, the first of 55 Irish athletes in action during the tournament, finished the race in two hours three minutes and 58 seconds, three minutes and 30 seconds behind winner and Olympic champion Nicola Spirig of Switzerland.

Rachel Klamer of Netherlands was second in a time of 2:01.44, with Sweden’s Lisa Norden two seconds further back in third.

The Derry woman is the leading European competitor in the World Triathlon Series (she lies in sixth) and would have been hopeful of making a spot on the podium.
