In Brief: The Rocket shoots into semi-finals
SNOOKER: World champion and world No 1 Ronnie O'Sullivan is closing in on a place in this year's Roewe Shanghai Masters final after victory over Mark Williams.
The Rocket impressed with a 5-3 quarter-final win at the Grand Stage -- and will now play Scotland's Stephen Maguire in the semi-finals.
The last quarter-final to finish saw Glaswegian Maguire hold his nerve to beat Day in a tense final frame decider. Day led 2-1, but Maguire bounced back with breaks of 114 and 64.
Earlier, English potter Mark Selby, the current Masters and Welsh Open champion, bravely battled back from 3-1 down to beat Hong Kong's Marco Fu 5-3 in their quarter-final clash.
But six-time world champion Steve Davis lost five frames in a row in a 5-2 defeat by Welshman Ricky Walden, a qualifier, in their quarter-final meeting in the Far East.
Olympic hero Joyce in last four
BOXING: John Joe Joyce is through to the last four of the IABA Open Senior Competition following a deserved win over John Murray at the National Stadium in Dublin last night.
The Irish 2008 Olympian and reigning light welterweight champ from St Michael's, Athy earned a 19-10 verdict.
Joyce will now meet Crumlin's Phil Sutcliffe in tonight's semi-finals with a place in next Friday's deciders up for grabs.
Joyce's last fight saw him edged out on a count-back against Dominican Republic puncher Felix Diaz, who went on to win gold at the Olympics.
Tom Blaney and Brian Brosnan also recorded wins, Blaney beating Terry O'Neill 15-7 and Brosnan advancing after Andrew Jennings retired in the fourth round.
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association are using the Open Senior Competition as part of their selection process for next month's European Championships in Liverpool.
Brilliant Rooney upsets Castagnet
SQUASH: Last night's play at the BYMAC Leinster Senior Open saw both home players, John Rooney and Aisling Blake through to today's semi-finals.
Rooney came from behind in each set to upset French fourth seed Mathieu Castagnet in straight games before a packed gallery in Fitzwilliam LTC.
Top seed Chris Ryder managed to hang on for a five- set victory over fellow Englishman Chris Simpson in a marathon 101-minute match winning 14-12 in the fifth.
The ladies event saw Sligo's Blake up against Laura Mylotte's conquerer, Victoria Lust. Blake put in an extremely accomplished performance to book her place in the semi-finals with the minimum of fuss.
