A stunning victory by Ireland at the world championships in New Zealand gave their adaptive coxed four a place in the 'A' final -- the first time an Irish crew has achieved a final place in the paralympic boat classes.
After beating their own best time in their heat on Monday, the Irish line-up -- Sarah Caffrey, Shane Ryan, Kevin du Tout and Anne-Marie McDaid -- coxed by Helen Arbuthnot, knew they had to be first or second across the line to achieve their goal.
In the push for the line disaster struck the Polish team as they caught a boat-stopping crab. As Poland suffered the heartbreak of being overtaken by every other boat in the race, Ireland cruised into the final with second-placed USA.
Andy Murray began the defence of his Valencia Open title with a straight-sets win over Spain's Feliciano Lopez.
The Scot had to work hard for a 6-3 7-6 (7-1) victory and faces Juan Monaco next.
Meanwhile, Colin O'Brien proved the master in the all-Irish battle against Sam Barry, 6-3 6-7 (2/7) 6-1, in the ITF Men's Futures event in Heraklion, Crete, yesterday.
O'Brien now meets Croatia's unseeded Ivan Cerovic with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. Mayo's Daniel Glancy lost out 4-6 6-4 4-6 in the first round against Marcus Eriksson.
RICHARD FARRELL produced a goal from a 21-metre free two minutes from the end to give St Mary's, Enniscorthy, a deserved draw (1-7 to 0-10) against Westmeath Schools in this Leinster Colleges SHC opener at Enniscorthy.
Points from Joey Doyle, Robbie Greville, Michael Murray and David McCormack helped Westmeath into a 0-7 to 0-2 interval lead. Westmeath moved 0-10 to 0-3 ahead in the second half, before a final-quarter fightback from St Mary's set the stage for Farrell's late leveller.

The San Francisco Giants were able to savour a first World Series triumph in 56 years when they beat the Texas Rangers 3-1 in game five of the best-of-seven Major League championship on Monday. Edgar Renteria stroked a three-run homer in the seventh inning and was named World Series MVP.
