Hockey's weekend wipeout
The Irish Hockey League has postponed this weekend's fixtures as snow carpets pitches and travel conditions remain hazardous.
Charlie Lyons, manager of Corinthians, who were due to host Cork C of I, reported: "Our pitch is under eight inches of snow. It will not be playable for some time."
The unexpected lay-off precipitated by the big chill has thrown the fitness progammes of most clubs into disarray.
Glenanne player-coach Graham Shaw, for example, had already reduced his men's training schedule after noting that they appeared to have lost freshness. Then came the blizzard to enforce a complete halt to all squad training as the club has no indoor facilities.
