Hockey: Delany strike clinches cup for Union

Rampant Railway Union blew holders UCD away in the second half to capture the Women's Senior Cup for the first time in the club's history on a 3-2 scoreline.

The first half of the final at Belfield was evenly contested with Sarah Green scoring early and Caroline Hill scoring late for the students, holders of the trophy.

In between, their rivals also potted two, the first from Eimear Lucey's penalty corner while the second was a superb solo effort from Emma Smyth.

Thereafter, the college side mysteriously and miserably failed to conjure up a further shot as they were overpowered by a Railway side that had unflappable defensive stars in the likes of Holly Jenkinson and Orla Fox.

They also had a match-winner in Zara Delany who dived in on 52 minutes to meet a cross from the right by Irish international captain Alex Speers to give the reigning national league champions a lead they never looked like relinquishing.

Though they failed to profit from a series of corners, the insurance goal was not required as all keeper Grace O'Flanagan had to worry about in the closing stages was the chill of the easterly wind.
