Hockey: Beaney seals Pegasus glory
Women's Irish Snr Cup Final
PEGASUS regained the title yesterday with two goals to spare over their old rivals Hermes.
These two teams have fought out some stirring finals in recent years and Pegasus were deserving winners after a polished performance.
Hermes played their part, but they lacked the know-how to overcome the experienced Belfast side.
Pegasus flew out of the traps and it was only the alertness of Hermes goalkeeper Emma Gray that kept her side in the match in the opening quarter.
Pegasus were eventually rewarded for the constant probing of their attackers when Suzanne Beaney bundled the ball into the net 10 minutes before the break.
Arlene Boyles, the former Irish international sweeper, bagged their second goal with a short-corner strike 12 minutes after the interval.
Hermes were back in the hunt four minutes later when Lisa Jacob made a timely run into the Pegasus circle, picking up a long ball and calmly lifting a lobbed shot over 'keeper Sharon Moffett.
However, expectations of a grandstand finish petered out as sloppy defensive work by the Hermes rearguard left them doing most of the defending for the remainder.
It was left to Beaney to finish the scoring and seal victory a minute from the end.
Hermes coach Mary Logue said: "It was a winnable match, but our overall play was lacking, especially our erratic passing."
