Hermes halt UCD gallop

women's hockey

UCD's unbeaten run was brought to an end as Hermes took the spoils in a thriller at Booterstown.

The students came into the game with an aura of invincibility and their rivals had departed from the Irish Senior Cup and lurched from defeat to defeat in the Leinster League.

When Anna O'Flanagan rattled home an early goal for college, it appeared that they were on the verge of also fading from IHL contention. Instead Hermes rallied with passion, hauling themselves level and then ahead through strikes from Audrey O'Flynn and Catriona McGilip.

The three points put Hermes top of Pool A, while the bonus point sufficed to nudge UCD ahead of Pegasus in second place. In Pool B, Jean McDonnell bagged a hat-trick as Railway Union hit nine past UCC to move into second behind Loreto.
