Greyhounds: Causeway the top dog
College Causeway was yesterday named the Dog of the Year at the National Greyhound Awards in Limerick, while Skywalker Queen was named the top female tracker.
The awards were presented at a new lunchtime setting and a fine crowd attended the function. The cheer of the day was reserved for the nomination of College Causeway as the leading male tracker with a huge supporting party having made the trip from Co Kerry.
College Causeway, a son of Go Wild Teddy and College Tina, is owned by Mike and Vincent McKenna and was bred by Frank Culloty in Killarney. He was trained by Pat Buckley.
Skywalker Queen completed the Irish Oaks and Dundalk International double for owner Ray Patterson. She was bred by Noelie Harte and trained by Frances O'Donnell.
Corporate Attack and Inny Blue were named the Marathon and Sprint award winners while Maybe Baby is the Brood Bitch of the Year.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame were world-renowned Dubliner Don Cuddy and the late Frank O'Connell from Birr.
There were shocks all the way in the second round of the Tote Gold Cup on Saturday night when Da Hatter was the fastest winner in 28.66. The other heat winners were Tyrur Bucko in 28.73, Castlehill Pat in 29.18 and Malouda in 28.70.
