Greyhounds: Big mike tops derby betting

Tyrur Big Mike is the new 4/1 favourite with the sponsors following a brilliant win in his third-round heat of the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby final at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night.

This was a serious statement from the big-striding black, which is trained by Conor Fahy for his father PJ. His winning time of 29.42 was the joint third-fastest time ever for the 550 yards at the track but he still only had a length and a half to spare over Definate Opinion.

Fahy was deprived of a treble by just a short head as Tyrur Enda was caught in the last stride by Barefoot Bullet in 29.68. In between, Tyrur McGuigan gave a near copy of sibling Big Mike's run as he took Heat 6 in 29.84.

It was a night that saw the whole complexion of the Derby change. The big loser was Makeshift as he faded on the run-in to lose out in Heat 6; he finished fifth behind Tyrur McGuigan. Other contenders to bid farewell were Farley litter brothers Turbo and Blitz, Fatboyz Tyson, Cabra Legend, Local Dee Jay and Ballymac Tipp.

The draw for Saturday's quarter-finals has thrown up some mighty clashes, with the meeting of Tyrur Big Mike and Mesedo Blue being one of the most intriguing. Fears that Westmead Grant may miss the next round were yesterday dismissed by trainer Fraser Black, who reckons that the dog may have suffered no more than a dead leg.

Ladbrokes' betting -- 4/1 Tyrur Big Mike; 6/1 Definate Opinion, Tullymurry Act; 8/1 Tyrur Enda; 10/1 Barefoot Bullet, Mesedo Blue; 12/1 Colorful Champ, Kinda Ready; 14/1 Thurlesbeg Joker; 16/1 Monlesa Alsation; 20/1 Krug Ninety Five, Razldazl Lord; 33/1 bar.
