Greyhounds: Beaming Dilemma can take advantage of Champ's misfortune

The greyhound scene has been decimated through the week by the Arctic conditions and a number of tonight's meetings have already been cancelled. However, there are high hopes that this evening's high-profile meetings at Limerick and Shelbourne Park can proceed.

Up to late yesterday the meetings definitely called off tonight were Harold's Cross, Newbridge, Thurles, Mullingar and Waterford, while tomorrow's meeting at Clonmel has also been cancelled. Inspections are planned at most other venues.

The quarter-finals of the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger headline the card at Limerick Stadium tonight and four terrific contests are in prospect. The sad news is that Colorful Champ has been withdrawn due to a hock injury sustained last week and he will be out of action for some time.

His absence from Heat 4 leaves this a five-dog race, with Beaming Dilemma the likely favourite but set to face a really tough task against the likes of Ballyhannon, Thurlesbeg Joker and Mustang Johnny.

The opening heat is another real teaser with Slippery Bob likely to set off in front, with the likes of Farley Turbo and Skywalker Queen trying to overtake him.

The two recommended bets in the Leger heats would be Michael O'Donovan's Judicial Academy in Heat 2 and Fraser Black's Westmead Bolt in Heat 3.

The ground staff at tracks all over the country have been doing Trojan work all week in an attempt to make their circuits raceable, while also clearing the general areas in all stadia of snow and frost. Shelbourne has been no exception and the reward could be an excellent night of racing this evening, where the semi-finals of the Comerford Cakes National Puppy Stake command top billing.

While trap one is far from a treasured berth at the track, it could work to the benefit of Tommy O'Donovan's Simple Class in the first heat.

This fellow gave a powerful performance last week when finishing strongly behind Farloe Force and if he can make a reasonable start then he may get the better of Rockchase Zico and Mozzletoff.

There are some precocious youngsters in the second heat, but Mossie O'Connor's Deerfield Music produced a high-level performance last week and a repeat might suffice in a race where Farloe Force and Colourful Fox will command huge respect.
