Greyhound racing: spotlight on Limerick for the St Leger

Attention switches to Limerick tonight when the 12 first-round heats of the Irish St Leger will be run -- and the occasion will be adorned with the presence of recent Irish Derby winner Skywalker Puma and his arch-rival Sparta Maestro.

Both dogs head the ante-post betting, with Skywalker Puma the 5/1 favourite ahead of Sparta Maestro at 6/1, and Camas Crash the third choice at 9/1.

The odds for the big two are not bad and are well worth considering. Both dogs have relatively handy first-round tasks this evening with Skywalker in particular certain to be a very short-priced favourite. He goes from trap two in Heat 7 and should be very close to the front entering the back straight where his outstanding pace can come into effect.

Two races later, Sparta Maestro will get into action and, while he faces a stiffer task, he should come through with flying colours. Robert Gleeson's Ardkill Star is the likely danger in a race where the very promising youngster Fivestar Bomber is being thrown in at the deep end. Sparta should advertise his outright prospects.

One of the bankers of the round could be Money Talks in the opening heat, with his brilliant early pace likely to give him the advantage, while Owen McKenna's frustrating Tibetan Skies can defy a bad draw to take Heat 2.

Ballybough Hawke may be a value bet against Crossfield Star in Heat 3.

The clash of Milldean Tally, Laughil Billy and Refuge Of Sinner could be the match-up of the night in Heat 4 and Milldean's early pace may just swing this one. All the action from Limerick will be shown live via the Inter-Track service, which can be viewed at every track throughout the country.

There will be no major sweepstake action at Shelbourne but a race that stands out is a brilliant Open Puppy 525, where some of our top young prospects will be in the line-up.

Owen McKenna's Farloe Buddy made a hugely impressive debut at Shelbourne 10 days ago and faces a much tougher task now with the likes of Jacksallstar, Rockchase Reem and Scolari Express in the opposition. Bet of the evening at Shelbourne could be Michael Murphy's Morell Knave in the concluding 600.
