Giro star backs ‘selfie teen’ in online row

A CHAMPION German cyclist has reached out to the Giro d’Italia Irish selfie’ teen to express his support.

David McCarthy (18), from Fermoy, Co Cork, publicly apologised to Marcel Kittel (26) for taking a selfie’ with the cyclist minutes after he collapsed in exhaustioan having won an Irish stage of the Italian race last week.

The Irish cycling fanatic became the target of a vicious social media hate campaign.

David’s family were so concerned that they asked him to stay off the internet.

David publicly apologised to Marcel Kittel, to his team colleagues and to anyone who may have been offended.

And now Kittel has personally contacted David and told him not to worry.

“He expressed his support for David through a direct message (on Twitter) and told him not to worry,” David’s mother, Colette, explained.

However, she said she was “shocked” by the vile abuse her son was suddenly subjected to.
