A brilliant display from Ireland goalkeeper Emma Gray could not deny Germany a 3-1 victory on day two of the World League Olympic qualifier in Valencia yesterday.

Buoyed by their 4-1 defeat of South Africa on the opening day of the tournament, the Irish women held their opponents - ranked sixth in the world - scoreless up to the interval.

The Germans took the initiative in the third quarter, scoring once from a penalty corner and once from play, either side of a couple of attempts by Megan Frazer, which were well saved.

Anna O'Flanagan slammed home a defiant reply at the start of the final quarter but Lydia Haase's late diving effort put an end to all thoughts of snatching a draw.

The Irish are due to meet underdogs Uruguay tomorrow (12.00pm) with the highly-rated USA to follow on Tuesday (2.00pm) as they seek to secure a place in the last eight of the tournament.
