Gaughan the sligo hero
Gary Gaughan pulled out the big scores for defending champions Sligo, who were pushed all the way in a lively encounter at Charlestown last night.
The provincial and All-Ireland champions appeared to be in trouble when Mayo drew within a point as extra-time beckoned but, with sharp-shooter Vincent Frizell, who finished the game with five points to his name, deadly accurate, it was Sligo who held out for victory.
The Yeats County led 1-7 to 1-5 at the interval, with the goals coming from Gaughan and Darren Coen. And it was Gaughan who sealed it with a crucial point in injury time.
