Irish athletes enjoyed a successful day as they secured their first medals at the Youth Olympics in Turkey yesterday.
Ruairi Finnegan (St Eunan's Letterkenny) produced a brilliant performance to take gold in the 1500m.
The 16-year-old led from start to finish and had a comfortable cushion after running a time of 3.53.78.
Finnegan (pictured left) explained: "I had a plan for each lap and kept to it. I stretched out at the bell and went for gold; nothing else was on my mind."
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Colaiste Iosagain) heroically claimed a silver medal in the girls 1500m in a PB of 4.26.42.
More medals could be on the cards on 4 today, with four Irish runners in the reckoning.
Marcus Lawler (CBS Carlow) looks good for a medal after winning his 200m heat with ease. Also into finals are twins Ben and Megan Kiely (400m hurdles), with Ciara Giles Doran (Ferrybank AC) in the semi-finals of the 200m.
