Evans set to face Olympic hero Dan

BADMINTON

Scott Evans defeated Austrian Michael Lahnsteiner 21-15 21-16 in the World Championships in London yesterday to set up a second-round showdown with China's reigning Olympic champion Lin Dan.

Chloe and Sam Magee advanced in the mixed doubles by beating French pair Baptiste Careme and Laura Choinet 18-21 22-20 21-19.

EQUESTRIAN

SIX horse and rider combinations, and one reserve, have been selected to represent Ireland in the European Eventing Championship in Germany later this month.

The Irish team must finish in the top two of the countries not already qualified for the Olympic Games to book their ticket to London. So far Great Britain, Germany and Belgium have made the cut.

Capt Geoff Curran (The Jump Jet), Jayne Doherty (The Only One or Ravenstar), Mark Kyle (Coolio), Joseph Murphy (Electric Cruise), Camilla Speirs (Portersize Just a Jiff) and Sam Watson (Horseware Bushman) make up the team, with Elizabeth Power (Kilpatrick) the reserve.

HOCKEY

national men's coach Paul Revington has added two players to the Ireland squad for the EuroHockey Nations Championships in Germany at the end of the month.

Experienced Glenanne centre-half Joe Brennan did enough in last weekend's games against Argentina to see off the challenge of Stuart Loughrey, now playing his club hockey in England.

And Bangor native Chris Cargo, on the books of Reading in the English league, has displaced Phelie Maguire, who was in the Irish side that won promotion to Europe's top division two years ago. SQUADS IN FACTFILE

RUGBY LEAGUE

Super League giants St Helens have signed Aaron McCloskey and Ian Cross after both Limerick youngsters made big impressions while on trial with the club.

SOCCER

AN inexperienced Ireland U-19 team were beaten 3-0 by Serbia in Belgrade last night. The teams meet again tomorrow as Ireland gear up for the first phase of the UEFA Championship qualifiers from October 6-11 when they will meet Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and hosts Bulgaria.
