Denis Lynch and Billy Twomey kicked off with a one-two in the opening Speed event at the stylish Global Champions Tour show in Monte Carlo, WRITES louise parkes.
Riding the talented but sometimes tricky 15-year-old gelding Lacroix -- which is owned by Clare Whitaker, wife of British jumping legend John -- Lynch pipped Twomey, who shared runner-up spot with Australia's Edwina Alexander.
At Hickstead yesterday, Anthony Condon was bidding to qualify Twomey's stallion Blue Thunder for tomorrow's Derby and did so by a whisker when finishing 32nd.
There were 35 qualifying spots up for grabs and 10 Irish riders made the cut, including Shane Breen (Dorada), who finished fourth, and Capt David O'Brien (Mo Chroi), who slotted into sixth.
Twomey will fly back from Monte Carlo to bid for the coveted Hickstead Derby trophy, which was last won for Ireland by Peter Charles in 2003.
