Equestrian: Clarke sets pace in HSI Spring Tour

Meath rider Gerard Clarke heads the HSI Chippison Spring Tour leaderboard at the halfway stage of the 14-leg series following his victory at Kernan's Equestrian Centre in Crossmaglen last Sunday.

The 20-year-old saw off formidable opposition in the nine-horse jump-off with a superb round on Kellswater Crimson. Runner-up was Peter Smyth on Willem, with James Kernan third on his home turf on Ben Mullier.

Clarke plans a limited number of outings for Kellswater Crimson over the final seven legs as he's expecting to be called up with this horse for the upcoming Nations Cup season.

He was runner-up with Ardragh Stein at the opening leg at Kildare International in February, and was second again in Cavan a week later riding Colorado.

John Floody was back in the limelight with a win for PMR Caballero at Broadmeadows Equestrian Centre, but Clarke's success last Sunday and his consistent results have ensured he has the whip hand moving on to the double-bill at Cavan and at Maryville next Sunday.

The HSI Chippison Spring Tour concludes at Coilog on April 17.
