Doyle and Lynch rescue sixth spot

EQUESTRIAN: Ireland finished sixth in the Super League Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany last night where clear rounds were in short supply but both Edward Doyle and Denis Lynch managed one to keep their team in it.

Over a very tough track, Doyle kicked off the Irish effort with a foot-perfect run with Sequoyah Farms Utopia while Capt David O'Brien (Mo Chroi) and Cian O'Connor (Irish Independent Echo Beach) followed with eight faults each.

Anchorman Lynch ensured that one of those eight-fault results could be dropped when, with the best three scores taken into account, his four-fault effort rounded up the Irish first-round tally at 12.

Doyle's mare wilted in the second round as the Kildare partnership collected 20 faults and when O'Brien collected another nine, and then O'Connor also left two fences on the floor, the situation was looking dangerous. But Lynch came to the rescue with a clear at his second attempt.

Germany eventually won through ahead of the Netherlands with the USA slipping to third.
