Doubts loom over Kieran's racing future
THE main greyhound stories on Saturday didn't concern the actual racing but rather the pre-racing trials at Shelbourne and Dundalk.
The lead story was a tragic one as the great tracker Tyrur Kieran sustained a serious hock injury in a spin around Shelbourne on Saturday. He was very lame after stopping the clock in 28.84 and trainer Paul Hennessy reports that the Scottish Derby winner and English Derby runner-up will be X-rayed this morning. While the trainer feels it may not be the worst possible hock injury, his future racing career is obviously in doubt.
English Derby winner Loyal Honcho faded visibly on the run-in when clocking 29.03 in his solo spin and Seamus Graham has ruled out the Boylesports International next weekend for the dog. He will give him more time and it is quite possible that the Paddy Power Irish Derby will be his next target.
At Dundalk on Friday, Skywalker Ace (29.62) and College Causeway (29.75) satisfied in their preparatory trials for the Boylesports International which will be run next Saturday.
English challenger Romeo Maldini clocked 29.82 on Saturday evening and he must have a big chance of making the line-up which will be finalised today.
By the way, the Pick 7 Jackpot soared to over €81,000 on Saturday night at Shelbourne and two lucky punters walked away with €32,545 each.
Star performance at the meeting was Mid West Blue which flew home to beat Iguazu Falls by four lengths in 29.80.
