Donegal's Karl Griffin (UCD) reached the 800m semi-finals at the World Junior T&F Championships with a cleverly timed run in Oregon.
The Tir Chonaill runner, who has a 1:47 personal best, ran well tactically to finish second in his 800m heat in 1:50.69 on Friday night, which clinched him an automatic spot in the semi-finals, which take place in the early hours (00:25) of tomorrow morning (Sun).
Meath's Robert Tully (Star of the Sea) paid a heavy price for leading his 800m heat through the bell with a flying 52-second lap, fading to finish last in 1:52.86. DSD's Siofra Cleirigh Buttner, with a time of 4:33.4, also failed to progress in the 1500m heats.
The standard at world juniors (U20s) is extremely high and Griffin's qualifying time only ranked him 21st of the 800m semi-finalists.
Hammer thrower Emma O'Hara was the only other one of Ireland's nine-athlete team who got through qualifying.
