Dog chat: Big Mike given Derby target after injury scare

Fears that Tyrur Big Mike might have sustained a serious injury in a trial spin at Shelbourne on Saturday night have proved off the mark, but the dog will miss his intended first target of the year, the College Causeway/Killahan Phanter Easter Cup.

Owner PJ Fahy reported yesterday that Big Mike was very sore after his 28.81 spin when he struggled from the third bend home.

"It seems that he overstretched and did some muscle damage, but he is in great form after it," Fahey said. "We will have to give him about three weeks off and that will rule out the Easter Cup, but the Irish Derby is his target".

St Leger winner Farley Turbo strode out well in his 28.55 trial and he is on target for the Easter Cup, while last year's winner Thurlesbeg Joker also moved nicely when clocking 28.69.

The entries for the Easter Cup, which will have a winner's prize of €25,000, will close a week today and the first round will be run on Saturday week.

Meanwhile, this Saturday will see the final of the Tote Gold Cup at headquarters and all six finalists will probably go on to contest the Easter Cup.

This is a really open final and it would be no surprise if Slippery Bob went off favourite after his amazing recovery on Saturday, when his cause looked lost at the first bend, to qualify in third.

He is one of three finalists quoted at 3/1 with Paddy Power, along with Judicial Academy and Quick Lee.

Enniscorthy had a very successful re-opening last Thursday and a big crowd is anticipated this Thursday when a gala meeting will be staged. There will be boosted prize money for all races and a good quality card.

It will be a very busy weekend, with the semi-finals of the Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Juvenile Classic at Tralee on Friday and then on Saturday the semi-finals of the Roches Feeds Oaks at Limerick and the Kudos Supersprint at Curraheen Park.

The second round of the Gain Cesarewitch will be run at Mullingar on Saturday.

Roches Feeds Oaks Limerick -- Heat 1: 1 Express Gem; 2 Tyrur Tinkerbell; 3 Cornamaddy Swift; 4 Express Trend; 5 Fatboyz Dizzy; 6 Mileheight Robin.

Heat 2: 1 Julia; 2 Borna Del; 3 Canavour Lady; 4 Inshaarla; 5 Air Force Ellie; 6 Local Flyer.
