Police were forced to open fire on a car which tried to crash through barriers set up for the final stage of the Tour de France in Paris.

The car, which had two occupants, escaped after coming under fire in the Place de la Concorde.

Hundreds of thousands of people will gather in the Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Elysees today for the final leg of the Tour de France where Team Sky's Chris Froome is virtually guaranteed victory

Police official Luc Poignant said officers were finishing setting up the barricades for the race when the car tried to crash through the barriers.

Poignant told the BFM television network that no officers were injured.
