Nicolas Roche followed in his father's illustrious footsteps today with victory in the Route du Sud in France.
The Irish Independent columnist won the event after successfully defending his 45 second lead in the three-day event by finishing in the peloton on a third and final stage won by Italy’s Adriano Malori.
The victory is Roche's first in a stage race and the Route du Sud is a race his father won in 1985 and that his cousin Dan Martin won in 2008.
The Tinkoff-Saxo rider said: "It was a magnificent feeling crossing the finish line taking my very first GC win after three days of very hard racing. This was a confident-booster before taking on Tour de France in a couple of weeks, so obviously, I'm looking forward to it."
Delighted to see Nicolas Roche win his first cycling tournament, I always enjoy reading his articles in the Indo #toughsport— Bernard Brogan (@bernardbrogan) June 22, 2014
