Bennett began the race with a bang on Wednesday when he outgunned Degenkolb and French fastman Nacer Bouhanni to take victory on stage one.

Despite finishing fourth to Degenkolb on stage two, Bennett lost his yellow jersey to the German, but a second stage win on Friday saw the Carrick-On-Suir youngster bounce back into the race lead ahead of the penultimate stage time trial, won by world hour record holder Alex Dowsett of Movistar.

Dowsett held on for overall victory yesterday as Bennett claimed his fourth top-four placing of the five-day race in Nurnberg.
