Croke Park loses out on NFL game next season

WEMBLEY Stadium is to host two NFL games in 2013 in a deal that is a blow to Croke Park’s hopes of holding a game.

The Minnesota Vikings will play six-time Super Bowl champions the Pittsburgh Steelers in London on September 29 next year.

The NFL had already confirmed that Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers will play on October 27, 2013.

However, Croke Park had been hoping to host a game involving the Steelers, owned by US Ambassador to Ireland Dan Rooney, next autumn.

It had been estimated that a regular season American football game here could be worth €50m to the local economy, and would have followed on from the successful college game between Navy and Notre Dame at Lansdowne Road in August.

That game will not now happen in Ireland next year but Croke Park has indicated that it will push for another American game after 2013.
